I can’t say enough positive things about VEC Oakland. I brought my cat Nova in after suspecting she had ingested a craft string. She was profusely vomiting and hadn’t eaten in several days. When I brought her in, they took her back immediately to assess her. During the same visit, Nova received an X-ray and the string was surgically removed. They saved her life! After a day of recovery, she was discharged. I received a detailed explanation of her medications and how to administer them, as well as aftercare instructions. Dr. Benbassat and Becca were amazing. They were so sensitive to our needs and showed us so much kindness. Everyone was so incredibly kind and patient. Nova truly received the best care possible. I’m so very grateful for VEC and can’t recommend them enough!

I took my almost three month old puppy here for what turned out to be an upper respiratory infection and they took such amazing care of her. They made sure that I understood all the instructions and ensured that I knew what to expect as she recovers. I hope you never have to use an emergency vet, but if you do, go the VEC in Oakland. Seriously, you guys are amazing. Thank you again. She couldn’t stay awake for her photo shoot. Sorry.

I’ve had a lot of questionable emergency vet visits over the course of my time as a cat/ ferret owner. This place is the furthest thing from questionable, I feel like the people here are genuinely good people and they all care so much. They deal with stressed and upset pet parents in addition to our struggling babies. They work odd hours and see so many hard things. These people are our overlooked earth angels that give us peace of mind when we need help the most for our fur babies. I spent most of my weekend here, strange hours during the morning and evening and saw some of the same workers there. I made a joke inquiring if they ever go home - but the reality is that while this is a job for them, you cannot buy the hearts they have and the care they show. The patience they show when they are dealing with difficult situations is admirable. They have a great system of monitoring pets and I felt like I could rest easy knowing they were watching my kitten recover from his surgery. These are very kind people. The prices are high, it’s an emergency vet. This comes with pet ownership and this business must be able to operate in order to be able to save our pets. A high cost is sometimes what we pay to save our pets. But in all reality the price was quite reasonable and nothing unnecessary was added in. I would bring my babies back in a heartbeat knowing that they are open 24/7. You might have to wait a bit when you get there but they prioritize accordingly. You won’t show up with a pet on deaths doorstep and be ignored for hours. But sometimes the vets are in surgery or tending to a greater emergency and you will need to wait. Be patient. Everyone here is here for a reason and dealing with their own emergency. Breathe easy knowing the people here are all animal lovers and owners and are all really kind people. Please treat vet staff like humans who have feelings, this job is hard and they care a lot. Thank you to your whole team, I was so scared this weekend and now my Chicken Nugget is asleep on my chest with a full belly of food.

After we got home late one evening and our 80 pound Bernese Mountain Dog couldn’t walk, we were at a complete loss. We quickly googled 24 hour emergency vets in orlando and were luck enough to find this one. They were super helpful and informative over the phone, and even gave us tips on how to get her from our apartment into the car. They met us at the door of the office and were able to help her out and give her amazing care that pointed us in the right direction, all while it was 4 am. We also had x-rays done for a very reasonable price. The compassion we received at such a scary time will never be forgotten.

I took my Golden Retriever, Piper, here due to a recommendation from my primary vet. My vet felt/saw something on a x-Ray in my dog’s stomach after I took her in for gastrointestinal issues. She stated that it did not necessarily look like a foreign body, and might be abdominal swelling, but that Piper should be monitored overnight at ER vet in case surgery was needed. Upon arrival, this ER Vet saw the x-ray and immediately stated from her experience that there was definitely a foreign body in there and surgery was necessary ASAP. I pushed back some on that idea as my dog has never been known to swallow items. Vet was adamant there was something in there, even clarifying she is pretty sure it is a sock. I then was quoted almost $8,000.00 for a foreign body removal surgery. I don’t have those funds on a whim, especially in today’s economy. I charged it because I didn’t know what else to do. To make things worse, I first obtained a zero interest credit card through them (with their partner bank). Even though we were able to show we had approval and a card would be mailed, they were not able to use the new card because of a software glitch. They refused to start surgery until they had payment. Thinking time was possibly critical, I charged it to another card to get Piper’s surgery started ASAP. After she had surgery, the vet found that the there was no foreign body and the swelling/bad x-ray image was just a case of pancreatitis. I asked if there was any test they could have done first to catch that before surgery. She stated bloodwork, but that Piper’s was good. In the end, it was an illness that was cured with diet and a few days of antibiotics/pain meds. The vet did cut the bill down to a little under $4k since there was no foreign body, and not as many procedures/hospital monitoring were needed. But paying that much $$$$ is still unacceptable to me. I realize it was technically an exploratory surgery, but I was assured multiple times that there was def something in there. I was convinced from the vets advice (against my belief my dog ate “something”) that she might not make it if the surgery was not performed. In the end, I was left with a dog that had an approximately 12 inch incision. Poor little angel was gutted of her intestines to palpate them during the surgery. She was in pain and scaring us for days not eating. She had a rough recovery. Thankfully she ended up being okay! Now I owe almost $4k on my credit card for a surgery that was not necessary. This money hurdle caused us to reschedule personal medical procedures and cancel an annual family vacation because they milked me dry. To top everything off their zero interest credit card that was never even used dropped my credit score from 820 all the way down to 760. And as a final knife in the back her pancreatitis seemed to have returned for a short bout a few weeks later while we were out of the state visiting in-laws. The vet refused to call in any of the antibiotics/meds that helped her, even after everything we’ve been through. I was hoping my father would get them and overnight them to us in GA. They stated they will not call in any prescriptions without seeing the dog first. I do not believe anyone at the practice had ill-intentions and that this was just a series of bad events. The vet was nice and professional, I am sure the misdiagnosis was an honest mistake. The office manager and vet technicians were all very friendly as well. However, an apology for the unnecessary surgery and cutting the bill to a more reasonable amount would have gone a long way. This experience was devastating in many ways for my family and 6 year old daughter both financially and emotionally. We are animal lovers and were forced to consider the idea of Piper potentially passing because of the outrageous amount of money. If that was my other dog, who is old, she would have been wrongfully put down over that misdiagnosis, knowing at her age she would not survive a surgery like that. Thankfully our Piper is okay, and that is what is most important!
